Documents for residence, work and study in Italy

Permesso di soggiorno, student visa, employment and family reunification. Each path has its own list — and its own order.

Which path is yours

  • Permesso di soggiorno — residence permit for anyone who wants to live in Italy: work, study, family or while awaiting citizenship.
  • Student visa — enrolment, proof of funds, health insurance and translated academic records.
  • Work — contract, proof of qualification and, for regulated professions, recognition of the title.
  • Family reunification — proof of the family link with translated and apostilled certificates.
  • Residence registration — the basis for almost everything else.

What usually needs sworn translation

  • Birth, marriage and death certificates, to prove family links.
  • Degrees, transcripts and syllabi for enrolment or recognition.
  • Criminal record certificates and equivalent attestations.
  • Proof of income, employment and professional experience.

The deadline trap

Several of these documents have limited validity. Issuing them too early means they expire before filing; too late means not having them in time for the appointment.

The right order: first the documents that do not expire, last the ones that do.

Who signs the translation

Not every translation carries legal weight in Italy. A sworn translation (traduzione giurata or asseverata) only exists when a qualified translator takes legal responsibility for the text and swears it before the competent authority.

  • Tribunale di Roma — listed in the register of technical and specialised professionals.
  • Italian Chamber of Commerce — officially registered in the ruolo periti ed esperti.
  • 15 years living in Italy, inside the system that issues and receives these documents.
  • Over 50,000 documents translated in Portuguese, Italian, English and Spanish.

In practice: the document I sign enters the Italian system directly, with no need for additional consular validation.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with clients outside Italy?
Yes. Everything is handled remotely, by WhatsApp and email, with hard copies posted when required.

How long does it take?
It depends on volume and on the receiving authority. The deadline is stated in the quote, before any work begins.
